I Choose to Make Positive Healthy Choices for Myself

This week, our affirmation is: “I choose to make positive healthy choices for myself.”

This one is particularly helpful for people who are tempted by unhealthy foods or unhealthy habits to stray from their goals.

I used this one throughout my journey to quit drinking soda, and to quit smoking, and I’ll use it again in my journey to give up my dependency on caffeine. I grew up in a home where soda was always plentiful and stocked in a variety of flavors. Granted, as a child, there were limits, but upon adulthood, I drank the stuff like water. I was (and still am) a fairly picky eater, and water had no appeal until I hit my 20′s. When I decided soda was horrid for my health, not only because of the sugar content, but because of caffeine and dehydration, I said this out loud (no matter where I was or who could hear me) any time I was tempted to have a soda.

Now, I drink soda maybe once every few months, and that will likely cease all together for the simple fact that it’s just to syrupy sweet for my tastes.

Don’t ask me why I started smoking. I honestly think it was because I’d been told not to since I can remember-and I grew up around my grandfathers who both (still) smoke like freight trains. Whatever the reason, I picked them up at age 16, and smoked for a solid decade. Quitting was difficult. I still crave them during stressful times, even close to a year after I quit. I’m not completely nicotine free, because I still use an electronic cigarette, but I’m working on it. Though it’s not a “quit assist” device, it helps with the hand-to-mouth habit, and I’ve weened myself to weaker nicotine and I’ve not smoked an actual cigarette since. I should be nicotine free within a couple months!

Anyway, any time I have an urge to run to the nearest convenience store for a pack (which has become progressively less often), just like with the soda cravings, I say this out loud. It may take a few more times than with the soda craving, but it works.

And it can work for you, too, for any unhealthy temptation you may have.
